Community Dedication of SoJourner House

For the first time in Suburban Cook County, there is an alternative to being discharged to homelessness from MacNeal Hospital/Loyola Medicine following treatment. SOJOURNER HOUSE offers a necessary respite.


Sojourner House is the first interim housing facility for the those experiencing homelessness in Suburban Cook County. The program will also serve families awaiting permanent housing placement with stable housing and it also serves as an alternative to the PADS shelter for those who with limited mobility.

Join us Thursday, September 12, from 10:30 a.m. to noon for a community dedication of SOJOURNER HOUSE at 324 N Austin Boulevard in Oak Park.

Sojourner House is the result of the power of strong partnerships between government, non-profit organizations, healthcare institutions and the community.

Sojourner House, located in Oak Park, is the first of its kind in suburban Cook County.  The five unit home and additional coach house, is designed to:

  • keep families together with short-term stable housing

  • be an accessible alternative to homeless shelters

  • provide temporary medical respite for post-treatment recovery

 A resident of SOJOURNER HOUSE will join the community leaders speaking Thursday.  The speakers include:

  • David Pope, Executive Director, Oak Park Housing Authority

  • Lynda Schueler, Executive Director, Housing Forward

  • Anan Abu-Taleb, Mayor, Village of Oak Park

  • Dr. Charles Bareis, Chief Medical Officer, MacNeal Hospital

  • Andrew, Resident of Sojourner House

SOJOURNER HOUSE not only serves those being released from the hospital, it ensures they have a place to go; and it puts the residents on a path to permanent supportive housing and serves as a bridge to housing stability.
